Project Masterpieces assembles a series of paintings in various formats - alleged copies of iconic artworks. However, these are not precise copies, but rather a free interpretation which was given to these master pieces by each group member. The artists freely chose the materials, scale, colors and forms, though they still kept the basic structure of the original painting so that it remains clearly recognizable. The project deals with questions of contemporary painting and its contexts, as well as appropriating past works and reinterpreting them according to each of the group members’ personal quests. Hence, a liberated dialogue between past and present is created, “speaking” the pictorial language of our time.
