Love Birds / Fresh Paint 5 / Project

A complex relationship between flying love birds and a girl’s sculpture that share a single cage, is at the centre of the work Love Birds. The birds use her as a place of rest, scratch her hands with their claws, need her but at the same time hurt her. The child, on her part, completely devotes herself to the love birds surrounding her. Like them, she is also imprisoned in a cage, unable to get out, but unlike them she is static, gives herself up completely but also chains the birds to her. The work confronts the viewer with an interpretive dynamics, positing opposing emotional extremes without determining which of those extremes is in control of the situation – satisfaction versus victimhood, and unlimited giving versus exploitation.
